Salem was nice, and cold-

Lets just say Salem was cold but the Hotel Hawthorn was the coldest! It was a nice hotel though any room past the second floor did not have any heat!
The first day we drove up. We left at 8 am and it was a 4 ½ hour drive. I hate interstate 90 because all there is to see is McDonnald’s rest areas every 5 miles..McStupid!
After we got settled into the hotel (which was a half a block from the Salem Witch Museum we walked around to see the sights. There were so many people there, it was very hard to move around the streets.
We took a walking haunted tour that night after we went out for raw bar. It was funny, people thought Orbs were real, so we just went along with it and had fun. We took lots of photos in the cemetery and some cool old buildings. No ghosts were reported seen. By the end of the night our legs felt like they would fall off. We got back to the rooms and they were so cold. When we called the front desk they said they just turned on the boiler and it would take ½ hour to warm up the room. Never happened! We called the front desk all night and complained, while we had them bring up countless blankets and pillows. I took an ambient and passed out cold (literally). We also met a lot of people who didn’t have heat and the hotel made excuses all day and night.
The next morning we went out again and had a great breakfast at a place called Reds. Best home made corn beef hash in a long time. We went to the cemeteries, house of seven gables, found some great Halloween costumes (I also got a French maid outfit for the house). Sasha got a great mask for his 9 year celebration.
It was getting really late so we left. We drive 20 minutes to Boston and went to our favorite restaurant “Union Oyster House”. This was our 3rd time there and it was worth it! Tommy and Lorie also went there with us when we went to Boston for New Years two years ago. Every time we are near Boston we will make a point to go to that restaurant. We got back to Nyack @12……

So, what do I think of Salem?
It was a bit commercial. There are too many around this time of year. The streets roll up at 8 PM and no one gives a shit that you have nothing to do after that. The tourists have little respect for what they see and do. People were sitting on graves while eating chilli dogs. Kids had no idea that these events actually happened. People lettered all over the place.
Some of the buildings were beautiful. It was nice to get to see the real town (under all the glamour). We met some very nice people. Found a very cool and rare 1974 National Lampoons Magazine with Edward Gorey’s illustration on the cover and an excerpt inside.
But best of all we got to spend that experience with one another! That matters most.
