I felt so bad for my boss and the new employee from China….but first let me go back a little bit.
Last week we have been getting things in order for our new employee from china to arrive. I won’t post his real name, you won’t be able to pronounce it anyway. He arrived just fine and is a nice person. He speaks some English, but overall a shy guy. I had to bring him to our security office to get him a security badge to get into the building. Because his name is a bit complex, I asked him what he would like to be called. He said that his American name is Bison (like the Buffalo). We had his knick name put on his badge under his middle name. He was thrilled!
When I showed my boss he was also happy. He said that upon arrival to America, many Asian people take on an American name so it is easier to pronounce as well as a cool new name. I did have a similar thing when I was in Japan. For Bison, this name represents a large strong animal. Our Bison is as small as a toothpick, but I still call him Bison none the less. Great kid! When I asked my boss what his American name was he said “MIKE”…oh well.
Ok to get back to my story;
Yesterday was another day for the guys to stay late at work. From the moment Bison arrived they have been working every day and well into the nights. When I ask them what time they got home, it is never before 11 PM. Yesterday, my boss said he was going to Wallymart to buy something. When he got back he had a space heater. I asked him if it was for his apartment. It was for the office. He said that at 6PM the air unit in our office shuts off for the night and also is not on over the weekend. The heater was for them because it got Very cold. Now, when an Asian tells you it is very cold- IT’s BLOODY COLD. I have never been as cold as when I was in Japan. They don’t have the heaters we have in the states. You heat a house with a kerosene heater. I told him that there was something wrong with the system and that I will get the repair man here to fix it. We should have heat 24/7. He was so grateful. In Asia, if you work past Business hours the heat and the lights are shut off to conserve energy. He thought/assumed America was the same. All these days he and Bison have been freezing to death and not realizing that all along they could have had some heat.
Does this mean they will stay later when there is heat envolved?
